Renesas Develops WCDMA - GSM/GPRS Dual-Mode Chip

Renesas recently announced it has started sample shipping a new mobile phone LSI (Large Scale Integration) chip which is able to accommodate both FOMA, the WCDMA service provided by NTT DoCoMo, and the 2G standards GSM and GPRS. Its chip supports videoconferencing and is able to process 5MP image resolution. The chip, which was developed with the help of a seven billion Yen investment by NTT DoCoMo, is slated to go into mass production in the second quarter of 2005 and will be targeted towards both the Japanese and international markets.
